De film noir is duidelijk geïnspireerd op de harde stijl van misdaadromans uit de tijd van de Grote Depressie (eind jaren dertig) van auteurs als Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain, Raymond Chandler en Mickey Spillane. Vandaar ook dat sommige filmcritici film noir eerder als een subgenre van de misdaadroman beschouwen.

Billy Wilder maakte enkele jaren na Double Indemnicok en The Lost Weekend enkele noirs die niet zozeer krimi s waren, maar eerder satires op de Hollywoodproducties: Sunset Boulevard (1950) en Ace in the Hole (1951).
